Gandhi was born Indira Priyadarshini Nehru in Allahābād, the only child of Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Kaul Nehru.
Gandhi studied at Visva-Bharati University in Bengal and then attended the University of Oxford in England
In 1938 Gandhi joined the Indian National Congress, the political organization that was spearheading the fight for Indian independence from British rule.
She became India’s 3rd prime minister in 1966 and held the position for a total of 15 years. During her political career, Gandhi was viewed by some as a beloved symbol of India .
